Previously: The students of Coal Hill Academy were delivered a dilemma: They had to decide whether to sacrifice one of their lives to resurrect Quill. Charlie decided he would, but was attacked by a Weeping Angel and sent somewhere else. The weeping angels all later attacked the other students, killing Ram, Matteusz and Tanya. The Governors prepared to push forward with their plot, unaware that Quill had somehow survived her apparent death and had returned to kill the Governors. She killed the organisation and placed them in the ressurection oil in an attempt to bring back her allies from the dead. Meanwhile, Luke Smith and Maria Jackson went to investigate the case of a woman called Grace who claimed her deceased son had come back from the dead, but instead Luke decided to retrieve an old phone. He learnt that Rani Chandra and Clyde Langer were back, in 2016, four years after their disappearance. Rani and Clyde are at Cole Hill Academy, and have just witnessed the school being blown up, apparently with Quill. But Tanya is somehow back. Has Quill’s plan worked? Is she still alive? And where is Charlie?
Charlie is woken up by a group of doctors in a hospital
Charlie: What? Where am I? I don’t know where I am. What’s happening?
Doctor: It’s okay, Charlie. It is Charlie, isn’t it? My name is Doctor Katie Newman, and I need you to look at me for a moment. It’s okay. You’ve just been asleep for a few years.
Charlie: I don’t remember anything. I don’t remember this place.
Doctor: That’s because the last time you were awake it wasn’t here and it was a very, very long time ago. I don’t need to alarm you with that. Drink some water.
Charlie: I need to know the details. What is this place? How long have I been asleep?
Doctor: Some people take longer to adjust to this place than others. We’re aware that some improvements can be made but it’ll take a while for us to make them.
Charlie: Can you please explain. I’d like a fucking explanation please, someone.
Doctor: You are in the hospital of angels. It’s okay. You just came here one day. It’s likely that you were ill or injured by somebody who wanted to get rid of you. We get a lot of people in this facility who have been gotten rid of by somebody. Somebody who has the angels within their hands. It looks like you have had the same problem.
Charlie: Do I have to stay here? Can I go back to Coal Hill Academy?
Doctor: Coal Hill Academy? Oh is that where you came from? I’m afraid you can’t go back there, ever. This is the only place you’ll ever be going from now on. And also, you may be pleased to know that while you’re in this place, you can never die.
Charlie: I just want to see my friends. I just want to know if they’re alright. I just want to see what’s happened. Am I still on Earth?
Doctor: How would it be possible that we’d be on Earth?
Charlie: Well that’s where I came from. I don’t know where I am. What time or planet I’m in. I’m from Earth in the year 2016. Well, that’s where I came from.
Doctor: Of course you don’t know do you? You don’t know what happened.
Charlie: What do you mean I don’t know what happened? Be a little more clear, woman.
Doctor: You’ve slept here for a very, very, very long time.
Charlie: How long have I been asleep for? Tell me, Katie.
Doctor: You may not want to hear this and it may prove to be quite upsetting for you. You’ve been asleep for 27 billion years.
Tanya looks at Rani and Clyde before looking at the destroyed Coal Hill Academy
Rani: What do you mean you think you just died?
Tanya: If I explained that to you, I don’t think you’d believe me.
Clyde: Trust me, we’ve heard a lot of things. I’m sure we will.
Tanya: Wait-What happened to Coal Hill Academy? Where did it go?
Clyde: The building just blew up somehow. I don’t know how it did but it just did. It came as quite a shock to us. And then you just appeared out of nowhere.
Tanya: I remember dying. I remember my neck being snapped.
Rani: Sorry-Your neck was snapped? Who by? I’m sure we can help.
Tanya: I don’t think you could. The things that did this to me were not human.
Rani (Whispers to Clyde): Do you think we should tell her about us?
Clyde (Whispers to Rani): I don’t think so. Just pretend you don’t know about aliens.
Rani: Do you mean that the things you saw were alien? That can’t be possible.
Tanya: They were like stone statues. I don’t know what they did. They snapped me and two of my friends necks, and send my other friend, Charlie, away. Well, I call him a friend but he’s not really. He’s a bit of a pratt to be honest.
Clyde: We know a lot of people like that. We understand.
Rani: These creatures, are you sure they weren’t human.
Tanya: Oh they definitely weren’t human. Neither were the puppet masters controlling them. There are these people called the Governors who are in charge of Coal Hill Academy. I don’t know how, but something caused them to be in charge of the whole operation. I think they bring in the headmasters, some of the staff, and get rid of the staff when they’re not needed anymore. Anyway, they’ve got this whole big plan.
Rani: What sort of things do they have planned exactly?
Tanya: They didn’t say, but from what I’m guessing it’s an invasion of the planet Earth. I think the Governors and the weeping angels are planning to wipe out the human race.
Clyde: And these Governor people-Are they inside of the building?
Tanya: Yeah, I think so. From what I could tell.
Clyde: Then they’re gone now. The Governors must be dead.
Tanya: I don’t think they’d die as easy as that. I don’t think they’re human.
Clyde: I think we should call the police about the explosion.
Rani: Yeah I think that’s a good idea. I’ll do that now.
Rani checks her messages. There is one missed phone call from Luke and one missed message. She ignores them and phones the police.
Clyde: Strange things have been happening to us today, you see. It was daytime, and then suddenly it was nighttime. I knew the days got shorter as you got older but it was ridiculous.
Tanya: I think we should focus on one matter for the time being, to be honest.
Clyde: We wanted to have a look around the area before we joined this school. I’m sure it was just called Coal Hill School, not Coal Hill Academy.
Tanya: I’m sorry, but that isn’t important right now. What’s your name?
Clyde: My name is Clyde. And my friend is Rani.
Tanya: It’s nice to meet you Clyde, I’m Tanya. But I don’t need you getting involved in this. If you do, then I’m sure you’ll get hurt. So I suggest you and your friend Rani leave here right now if you want to keep your lives.
Clyde: We can’t just leave knowing that the whole world is at threat.
Tanya: There’s no possible way that you could help me with this.
Clyde: I’m sure there are ways in which we could help you, Tanya.
Tanya: No, there isn’t. If I’m alive, then my other friends are alive, so I’ve got to find them, group them together and stop the Governors.
Clyde: Then let us help you find them.
Tanya: I’ll tell you what you can do: You can wait until the police arrive at the scene and tell them and any other passers by that are likely to come out of their houses and ask what the hell the explosion was all about what you saw, but don’t tell anyone what I have told you here today. You talk to the police while I go and find my friends.
Clyde: Well at least we get to do something, I suppose.
Tanya: Good luck, and just so you’re aware, if you tell anyone anything about this, or get involved in this anymore, I’m not going to be the one that will protect you.
Clyde: Alright, I’ll know that. Good luck in finding your friends.
Tanya: I don’t need your luck. I don’t even know who you are.
Clyde (To Rani): She seems like a charming girl.
Rani: Yeah, sure she does. Let’s wait for the police like she says.
In the hospital
Charlie: 27 billion years? What the hell are you talking about?
Doctor: Let me give you a little rundown. I know you wanted one from the start. We have been running this hospital in space since the weeping angels came into existence. They quite often like to send people here, which is why it is known as the hospital of angels. In 2019, a weeping angel must have transported you up here, and we took you in. Each person gets their own ward, and their own supply of immortal life, so don’t worry, you may have been sleeping for a long time, but it won’t cut into your life that much. 27 billion years is like 1 millisecond to an immortal being. Everyone takes different amounts of time to sleep after being transported here. You slept 27 billion years, but some people have slept 2 hours and then woke up. One person slept for 3 Sextillion years. And now you’re here.
Charlie: So I’ve been in this room sleeping for 27 billion years?
Doctor: Yes, you have. And you’ll be in this room for the rest of eternity.
Charlie: Can’t I go to other places and interact with other people?
Doctor: No, it’s not safe to do that. We don’t want you waking or disturbing the other patients. The door is locked and there are no windows. Why would there be windows? This is space, and everything outside of this hospital is dead.
Charlie: So the Earth is gone? How long ago did it happen?
Doctor: People used to predict the universe would last about 20 billion years in total, but really it ended 5 billion years before that, as did the rest of the universe.
Charlie: I refuse to believe this is possible. This can’t be possible.
Doctor: I know it’s a lot to take in, but you’ve got enough time to adjust. We’re going to leave you for the moment, but if there’s anything you need then let me know.
The Doctor leaves the room. She approaches another Doctor.
Doctor: I need you to give the patient the serum once again. He believes what we told him, but we just need to make sure that this is all foolproof. Knock him out, wipe his memory and then we’ll do it again. We just need to make sure.
The other Doctor arrives in the room holding a needle
Charlie: What is that needle? I don’t want you poking that inside of me.
Needle Doctor: It’s okay, Charlie, it’ll only be quick. It will knock you out and then we’ll start all this again. We just need you to properly believe us, that’s all. And then, when you do, all of this can properly begin. Breathe in, please.
Charlie: What is happening? What are you doing?
Needle Doctor: There’s no point trying to escape. You’re trapped. There’s no way out of your bed, or this room, or this hospital. Just relax, it’ll be easier for both of us.
Charlie: I don’t want to make this easier for you. I don’t know what you’re trying to do to me but I’m not going to let you do it. I don’t know whether I have been asleep for 27 billion years, but whatever is going on, I won’t let you restrain me, or trick me, or trap me, or fool me.
Needle Doctor: Do you really want this to hurt more than it has to?
Charlie kicks the Doctor to the wall and grabs the needle. Two more Doctors come with needles but Charlie stabs them both. He hears a voice.
Voice: It’s Katie here. Oh Charlie, you really are a strong one, but the reason we’re doing this is to learn all about you. We’re going to do this one more time. Well, more than one more time. There’s no way for you to escape from this.
Charlie is knocked out. He wakes up on the bed once again.
Matteusz wakes up in someone's house. His vision is blurry. When his eyesight is restored, he sees an old man pushing a loaded gun against his face.
Old Man: Ah you’re awake, are ya? Finally. That’s taken you a feckin’ while.
Matteusz: Where am I? Who are you? What happened?
Old Man: I dunno, you just ended up in my feckin’ house, and now I’m pointing a gun at ya. Is that a good enough explanation? Now I need an explanation from you.
Matteusz: I don’t have an explanation. I have no idea why I’m here.
Old Man: You didn’t walk in the door, or come through a window or nothing, you just ended up on my floor somehow. Are you some sorta alien or something?
Matteusz: No I’m not an alien. I’m human. It’s been a long day and I have no idea how I’m here. You wouldn’t believe me if I told you what had happened to me today.
Old Man: Try me. I’ve seen a lotta things most folk wouldn’t believe.
Matteusz: I died today. I remember dying. The last thing I remember before waking up here was my neck being broken by some stone angel. Am I in the afterlife?
Old Man: No, you’re not in the afterlife. You’re just in my shit hole of a house.
Matteusz: Where abouts am I? Am I still in London?
Old Man: Yeah, you’re still in London. I’ll put the gun down now (Places the Gun on the floor and helps Matteusz up). I’m sorry, it’s just I get a lotta hostile visitors here, ya know. This is a farm, and lots o’ people come ‘ere to steal my crops.
Matteusz: Don’t worry, I’m not here to steal your crops.
Old Man: So you’re telling me that you died today? And now you’ve somehow appeared right here on me living room floor? How?
Matteusz: I have no idea. I’m Matteusz by the way.
Old Man: I’m Greg Sinclair. Me family have owned this farm for many centuries now. It’s a great place, but I have seen some strange things here. You say you came back to life today, and you may be shocked to know that I believe ya.
Matteusz: What strange things have you seen here before?
Old Man: I’ve seen ghosts, and supernatural figures, and I’m pretty sure I saw an alien here once. When me wife was alive, she never believed me. She never saw what I saw. I thought it was just me going mad. Me nut was driving me in and I was seeing things, you know? But no. I know for a fact that these things were real.
Matteusz: I’ve seen aliens. I’ve fought aliens.
Old Man: Oh, I’m sure you have. And of course I believe ya. I don’t know how or why these aliens and ghosts were hanging around on my farm, but they were. I don’t know why anyone would hang out in these parts.
Matteusz: Maybe it was just a random occurrence. Like me being here?
Old Man: Maybe so. Can I help you to some snacks or a drink of some kind? I may not be the most welcoming figure but I sure can cook up a nice belt of Cocoa!
Matteusz: No, but thankyou. I better go off and find my friends. If I’m alive somehow, then they must be too. They could be anywhere around the world if I’m here, but I’ll try my best to find them. We’re the only one who can stop the evil forces of the world.
Old Man: Well good luck, Matteusz. And if you ever need an extra bit of help, which I’m sure I won’t be able to give ya, then you know where I am.
Matteusz: I sure do, Mr Sinciair. I sure do.
Matteusz leaves. Janet Wilkinson enters the room.
Old Man: So that was the boy you said was going to come?
Janet: Yes. Well done for playing it out exactly as I asked.
Old Man: And will he be back?
Janet: The Black Guardian didn’t indicate that he would be. Thank You again, Mr Sinclair. I’m sorry to intrude into your home like this but it’s what had to be done.
Ram wakes up on a street floor. A group of drug dealers gather around him.
Dealer: Ah look, he’s waking up. Why don’t you give him another punch Daniel to make sure that he’s awake. We don’t want to wake the little boy from his sleep, do we?
Another dealer punches Ram in the face. Ram gets up and tries to whack him but Daniel pushes him back towards the ground and stamps on his hand.
Daniel: Don’t you think you can bully us around, mate.
Ram: Please, I don’t want to do you any harm. I don’t remember every meeting you guys, so could you just let me piss off somewhere and I’ll be out of your way.
Dealer: You were on our turf, and nobody except us goes on our turf.
Daniel: We need you to learn a lesson to make you learn from your mistakes.
Ram: Look, I just want to get out of here and find my friends. I don’t think I ever did anything to upset you or hurt you, so I just want to get out of here.
Ram gets up. The main Dealer aims a gun at Ram.
Dealer: Don’t you dare think about moving or I will shove this between your eyes.
Ram: I don’t know what I’ve done to hurt you. I’ve had a shitty day already and I don’t want you to make it shittier.
Daniel: If you don’t want to be hurt, then why did you land on our turf?
Ram: I don’t know why I’m here. I don’t remember anything that happened after-After-Oh no. That didn’t happen, did it? Did I die? How am I here?
Daniel: You ain’t died yet, mate, but if you think about moving you will.
Ram: I need to get out of here and I need to find my friends. The ones that are left, anyway.
Dealer: I don’t think we’ve made ourselves clear enough to you, blood.
Daniel: Why don’t you shoot him in the leg? Teach him a lesson so he don’t ever come back to this place and make sure that he doesn’t think about doing anything stupid.
Ram: Just lower the gun, okay. I’ll give you whatever you want.
Dealer: Alright, just get out of here. But if we ever see you again around these parts, then we will kill you. We will not hesitate to shoot your fucking balls off.
Ram: Alright I understand. I’ll leave.
Ram walks away, before kicking the gun out of the Dealer’s hands and grabbing it. He shoots and kills all of the Dealers in the room.
Ram: Don’t think about messing with me. Not after today.
The Police arrive at the scene of the explosion. Rani and Clyde greet them.
Clyde: Hiya. We called. We were walking along and then Coal Hill School just exploded.
Police Officer: It just exploded? Just like that? I struggle to believe that. Did you see anyone inside? Or did you see anyone come out of the building?
Rani: No, we didn’t. I don’t know exactly how it happened.
Police Officer: Well we will investigate now. Please leave the premises.
Clyde: Certainly ma’am. (To Rani) Why didn’t you tell them about Tanya?
Rani: Because I’m not the sort of person to snitch on people. I don’t want Tanya arrested because we don’t know that she’s responsible. It was probably some sort of alien or something, from what Tanya said.
Clyde: You really believe there are other alien hunters out there like us?
Rani: Oh yeah of course there are. And I think that our friend Tanya might be one of them.
Tanya hurries along the street. A police officer stops her.
Police Officer: What are you doing around here? Did you come from the School?
Tanya: There was an explosion. I needed to get as far away as possible.
Police Officer: Could you come with us please? We’d like to do some questioning.
The Police escort Tanya off in a police car. In the hospital.
Charlie: You’re telling me that I have been asleep for six billion years?
Doctor: Yes, I’m sorry. I believe you’re a human, aren’t you? Well, we’re the last survivors of the human race. The Earth exploded two billion years ago, along with everyone else, so now we’re the only ones. And thanks to this place, we will never die.
Charlie: Six billion years, eh? How come last time you told me it was 27 billion?
Doctor: What do you mean last time?
Charlie: Oh I remember. You’re playing some kind of game with me, and I think I’ve finally found a way to get out. I don’t know how many times you’ve tried drugging me and wiping my memory, but I don’t want to be a part of your silly little experiment anymore. I want to get out of this place, and find my friends before the Governors kill them.
Doctor: This must be a side effect of the drugs. You see, we have been giving you drugs, one each day, and they sometimes create fake memories. It’s a common side effect.
Charlie: I am not falling for your lies anymore, Doctor, I know that you have been mind wiping me and lying to me. Tell me, are we really in space?
Doctor: Of course we are. I can’t believe you think I would lie to you.
Charlie: This must be such a major flaw in this experiment. You thought you were being so clever, and you thought that I’d never remember anything that happened before you drugged me, but I do. It’s all coming back to me now.
Doctor: I think we’re going to have to rethink some areas of the experiment.
Charlie: I’m not letting you start this experiment over again, because I know you’ll find a way to knock me out and start again and I’m not having that. No way.
Doctor: Let me out of here please. We’re going to have to start again.
Charlie grabs the Doctor’s needles and bolts the doors.
Charlie: Whoever is out there, just know that if you dare try to knock me out or do anything stupid, then I will stab your friend in places that will hurt a lot.
Doctor (Outside): If we release the gases, it will not only knock Charlie out, but it will knock Katie out too. We can’t risk losing here. Not in such an important stage of our experiment.
Other Doctor: What the hell do you suggest we do then?
Doctor: Leave them both in there for a while. I’m sure eventually Katie will find a way to speak Charlie down and get out of there. Then we can continue.
Charlie: So then, Katie, tell me the truth. Every single part of it, please.
Katie: You’re talking nonsense, okay. Please give me back my equipment.
Charlie: I’m not fooling for your lies anymore, Katie, just give it up, okay. I’m willing to have a civil discussion with you, and comply to whatever you want as long as you let me give you my permission. I want to know what you are doing here.
Katie: Alright then, we have been lying to you. I’m sorry about that.
Charlie: Tell me then. Tell me exactly what you have been doing. Tell me exactly where we are and how far in the future we are. Tell me what exactly you want from me.
Katie: If you give me back my equipment, then I will happily tell you everything.
Charlie: No, because then you’ll wipe my memory and I won’t be able to remember any of this. I’m not letting you do any of that again.
Doctor (Outside): I think we just need to knock Katie out. We can’t risk any of our secrets being exposed like this. If Charlie is beginning to remember what was happening to him before we gave him the drug, then everything we have been doing could get out.
Other Doctor: He doesn’t know the ways out of this place. He thinks that we’re at the end of the bloody universe. There’s no way he can get the information out.
Doctor (Outside): Of course there’s a way. He’s a clever boy.
Other Doctor: We haven’t tested the effects of the knockout gas on human life. What if it has a negative effect on Katie? She’s a vital component for our mission.
Doctor (Outside): We’re going to have to take that risk. We can’t have Charlie awake. It’s too dangerous. We’ve got to knock him out somehow, and this is how to do so.
The police lead Tanya to an interrogation room. They sit her down.
Andrea: This is an interrogation session led by me, Detective Andrea Scott and my colleague Detective Martin Scorn. Could the teenager please state her name and identity for the record?
Tanya: I am Tanya Adeola. I am 17 years old.
Andrea: Tanya was at the scene of the explosion at Coal Hill Academy. Could you tell us exactly what you saw?
Tanya: I was walking along the street, by my school, and then it just exploded.
Andrea: Did you see anyone else there at the scene of the explosion?
Tanya: Well there were other people there. I don’t know them very well, only from the brief conversation we had, but I think they might be responsible. Their names are Clyde Langer and Rani Chandra. I think you should interrogate them instead of me.
Inside of the hospital room
Katie: I know this is hard for you to understand, but we need to do this, and you are the perfect subject for our experimentation.
Charlie: I’d like to know exactly what you are doing with me.
Katie: Okay then, I suppose there’s no harm in telling you what is going on.
Katie and Charlie are knocked out. The other Doctors walk into the room and carry Katie’s body away, before placing Charlie’s body on the bed. They wake Katie up.
Katie: Ah-What happened? I don’t remember anything.
Doctor: We had to use the knockout gas on you. It was the only way to get Charlie out of the way. He knows everything about us.
Katie: Well I’m afraid to say that I don’t know anything about you.
Doctor: Oh dear. Oh no. I think we’re alone in this now, Dr Bradshaw.
Other Doctor: Yes I think so. This is just what we feared.
Doctor: Well Katie isn’t of any use to us anymore, is she? I think it’s best that we dispose of her. She could give Charlie some help and we don’t want that.
Katie: Could you two explain where the hell I am?
Doctor: It’s all going to be fine, Katie. Just come with us.
The Doctor leads Katie away as the other Doctor shoots her in the head from behind. Elsewhere, Matteusz walks along the street where he sees Ram who is holding a gun to his head.
Matteusz: Oh Ram I am so pleased to see you!
Ram: Well you came at the right time. You get to witness my final moments.
Matteusz: What do you mean-Put that gun down. Please put that gun down.
Ram: I’ve lost everything that I hold dear to me. My dad, April, even my own life, really. I now know what happens once you die, and I know that now, I’m going to get some much needed peace. No afterlife, no worries, no anything. Just eternal rest. Now I don’t mind whether you stay here or not, but I am not letting you stop me from doing this.
Matteusz: Well I am going to stop you. I’m not going to let you do this, Ram.
Ram: You’re going to have to, Matteusz. Good luck with stopping the Governors.
Matteusz: Ram-Please-Put the gun down-Please-Just don’t do it-
Ram: Goodbye, Matteusz. Say goodbye to Tanya for me, if she’s still alive.
The screen fades to black. There is a gunshot.
Next Week: The Way Out
