The Doctor, Janet, Matt and their new ally Destari travelled across the deserts of Moros. It was within a few hours that they reached an inner citadel. Inside of this said citadel, a fair was taking place. Banners surrounded them and all of the residents were having fun. The Time Lord could have left Destari and continued with his travels-however he had learnt that the Tsuraxi were plotting an invasion. The Doctor sat down in order to rest his body.
“Tell me, Destari-what do the Tsuraxi want on Moros.”
“The Tsuraxi are on the search for an item known as the Dark Emerald. It is located within the citadels of Moros where we are now. This particular item can do many things: It can reverse the ageing process, it can make someone immortal, it can heal wounds. It could make someone the most powerful being in existence. You know the Tsuraxi already: They are on a quest to become more powerful, and this object will complete this mission.”
The Doctor realised that he had already encountered the Dark Emerald back on Earth in the Marriage Clinic. He kept that quiet for the moment as that may have occurred in Destaris future, or even her past.
“How do you know about the Tsuraxi Invasion?” Asked Janet. “Surely they wouldn’t tell people that they were plotting an attack.”
“Me and Coloni work for a secret intelligence organisation. We located a signal originating from a Tsuraxi mothership in which we heard their plots. We tried to warn the people aboard the Britannia but they just locked us up; they refused to listen. But not listening won’t make things go away. Now we are on Moros we need to warn the leader of this planet, the being known as the Sector, that the Tsuraxi are plotting an attack.”
The Doctor nodded. “Okay, me and you shall go to the Sector, while Janet and Matt look for the Dark Emerald.”
Matt nodded. “Why are we always bundled with the hardest jobs?”
“Hardest jobs? Have you even met me?”
The Doctor and Destari wandered off into the distance while Matt and Janet searched through the fair. There was a great deal going for it: Ancient antiques from the planets history, residents having fun on the games and virtual reality simulations. One so called ride even promised to take visitors to an alternate dimension. The two of them realised that where they were was a much more advanced civilisation than their own.
Their mission was to track down the dark emerald. They both knew what it looked like as they had encountered it previously during the Dalek attack. There was no sign of it. All they could see was a hectic selection of rides and artefacts. They hurried through the crowds of people. Suddenly, they heard a gunshot. There were screams of panic as all of the visitors ducked behind stalls and used artefacts from the stalls as defences. Janet and Matt remained low for a moment as they tried to figure out where the bullet had originated from. They slowly moved up as the screams continued to surround them. When they lifted themselves up they were greeted by a hooded figure holding a weapon at them.
When he pulled off his mask, Janet and Matt could not believe their eyes. It was Matt. Matt was standing in front of them-pointing a gun at them.
Janet was lost for words. “I-How-How is that even possible? Matt?”
The figure leaned forward and stared at Matt. “No-I am Scott, Scott Donovan. And you’re right, this is impossible. I’ve never had the opportunity to meet myself before.”
Janet and Matt stood motionless for a moment as he aimed the gun towards Matts forehead. He remained perfectly still.
“Please,” Matt begged. “Please don’t harm me, Scott.”
“I don’t know how this is possible. Anyway, it’s best to get rid of you, because there can only be one Scott Donovan in this universe.”
Elsewhere, Destari and the Doctor hurried through the exterior of the building before they reached some kind of cathedral. Destari knocked on the door three times causing it to open. Two men stood at the entrance pointing guns at the duo.
“I’ve had enough people point guns at me today,” The Doctor remarked. “Trust me, it’s been a shockingly long day.”
Destari waved. “I’m here to see the Sector. It’s incredibly important.”
One of the Guards laughed. “Nobody can see the Sector. You must know that by now.”
“Maybe I’m not making myself clear,” Destari responded. “I’ve got an important matter to report involving the safety of this planet. I don’t mind whether you just pass the message on to him but it has to get to him somehow.”
A grey bearded man entered through the corridors. “It’s okay, Guards do not worry. If it is an important matter then I shall deal with it myself. I may be old and weak but I am not incapable of dealing with my own matters.”
Destari smiled. She held her hand out but the Sector did not shake it. He led the Doctor and Destari through the series of corridors he came from. They eventually reached a grand room-bigger than any room either of them had seen before. It contained a throne, a bed and everything the Sector needed to survive. He sat down on a sofa. The Doctor and Destari soon did the same thing.
“Now tell me what is wrong.” The Sector demanded. “I have had so many assassination attempts in my time as Sector you would not believe. Please tell me if you have learnt of another. Indeed, please tell me if you are about to assassinate me, because I am an old man and my time is due.”
“No-” Destari intervened. “I have no intention to assassinate you. Me and my brother work for a secret intelligence branch, and we learnt of a planned invasion on the planet Moros by the alien warrior race known as the Tsuraxi.”
The Sector nodded. “Thank you for the warning, young woman. I shall address my people to warn them about this. We shall do everything we can to keep them safe.”
Destari grinned. “That’s good. It’s good to see this planet is in capable hands.”
Janet and Matt stood in a transfixed state as Scott continued to aim his gun at their faces. A screen soon appeared causing Scott to drop his weapon. The Sectors face appeared on the screen.
“Hello, people of Moros. I hope you are enjoying the grand fair that has been organised for you. I am here to warn you of a planned Invasion from the alien warrior race known as the Tsuraxi. They plan to destroy our world as we know it. I shall do all I can to keep you safe, and in return may you do all you can to keep those around you safe too. This planet has faced many hard times, and although we are not aware of when the Tsuraxi shall invade, we do know that they are coming. We shall update you with more as time progresses.”
The residents looked at each other in horror. Scott grabbed his weapon and looked behind him, but Janet and Matt had gone. He hurried after them.
Janet and Matt rushed through the festival stands and out of the building. Scott followed a little while behind them. Eventually, they reached the Sectors Citadel. Janet knocked on the door but nobody answered. She knocked again and nobody answered. She knocked one more time and the door slid open. Two guards greeted them from inside.
Janet tried to catch her breath. “I’m sorry to intrude but we need your help. A person who looks exactly like Matt here is chasing after us and trying to murder us. We need to be safe.”
The two Guards looked out of the building and saw the man running towards the doorway. “Oh I guess you could come in. We’ve already got visitors.”
Janet and Matt hurried through the corridors as Scott entered the doorway. He placed his shoulder on one of the Guards and suddenly he began to resemble them. He killed the other Guard with his weapon.
Janet and Matt continued to stroll through the corridors. They believed they were safe. From behind them they heard the calls of one of the Guards. Janet and Matt moved back towards him.
“It’s okay,” Revealed the Guard. “I shot down the man who was chasing after you. It’s all over now.”
Janet and Matt both breathed a sigh of relief. The Guard touched Janet on the shoulder as he suddenly morphed into her. Scott, now in Janets body, strangled Matt, knocking him onto the floor. She grinned.
Meanwhile in the sectors room, the Doctor, Destari and the Sector continued to discuss the Tsuraxi Invasion.
The Doctor took a sip of tea which had been made for him by a servant. “I’m here for personal reasons. The Tsuraxi warned me that I would face them again at my downfall. I know they approach me in my future, so I want to track them down in order to beat them to it.”
The Sector leaned forward. “We all have our aims and ambitions. Our journeys that we must go on in order to define who were are as a person. To round us, to shape us. Tell us more about yourself, Doctor-Are you an inhabitant of Moros?”
“No I am a Time Lord.”
The Sector dropped his coffee on the floor. “I thought time lords were legends.”
“They are. It doesn’t mean they can’t be real.”
Janet raced inside of the building and shut the door behind her. She was out of breath. She ran towards the Doctor.
“There’s someone out there who wants to kill us. He’s a shapeshifter, and he strangled Matt. Please you need to make sure that I am safe.”
The Sector smiled. “Don’t worry, you’re perfectly safe here.”
One of the Sectors servants approached from a doorway behind them and offered the four of them biscuits. Everyone but the Doctor refused. Janet took a seat next to the Doctor, the Sector and Destari.
“That mans face appeared on the screen,” Remarked Janet. “Destari succeeded in her mission of warning the leaders of the planet of the Invasion.”
“Yes indeed.” Destari replied. “My mission is over so I can return home soon.”
The Doctor intervened. “That’s all sorted now and thats great. One thing I want to know is where the shapeshifter is now. Is Matt okay.”
“I’m not sure Doctor I had to find safety. I couldn’t save him as well. It was too risky.”
The Doctor patted Janet on the back. “It’s okay you did the best you-”
Janet grabbed a gun from her pocket before he could finish the sentence and shot him in the back. The Doctor fell to the ground. Destari and the Sector gave out a gasp. The shapeshifter, who was in Janets body, threatened them all with a gun.
She smiled. “The Doctor was responsible for the death of my family. When the dimension bridge closed, he was too busy caring about himself and this puny female that he forgot about us. He let me and my family bleed through reality. Only I was strong enough to survive.”
The Doctor struggled to breathe. “I didn’t. I couldn't”
“It is an event that shall occur far in your future, Doctor, and that is why I attempt to murder you now so that you die before my family can too.”
“That’s now how time works. It will cause a fracture in reality. What the hell is this dimension bridge you speak of anyway?”
The Sector interrupted. “It is a bridge between realities. One of these realities is our own timeline, and the other is a parralel universe where events take a different course than in our own. The fractures are beginning to show. We even have our own amusement where you get to enter the other side.”
Janet (Or more accurately Scott) chuckled. “Oh that’s so typical! People are dying, but instead you just care about the profit and the entertainment.”
Destari recalled that she still had a weapon concealed within her pocket. She grabbed it and shot Scott with it, causing him to fall to the ground. He dropped his weapon and Destari grabbed it. She aimed the two guns in Scotts direction.
“You dare move or try to make any attempt on the Doctors life and I shall kill you.”
“Don’t-” The Doctor begged. “If you kill him then Janet shall die too.”
The Doctor managed to leap up and stand with the Sector, Destari and the Servant still standing hopelessly.
Scott sniggered. “That’s fantastic, isn’t it? If you kill me then your friends body dies too. And I’m not letting her body go until you’re dead.”
“If it means she’s freed I’ll allow that to happen.”
Destari dragged the Doctor back towards her. “Don’t you dare, Doctor. You are the one here who has the most likelihood of defeating the Tsuraxi and thwarting the Invasion. If you die, then we’ve not got much hope at all.”
The Doctor looked back and noticed the door which the Servant had departed from previously. He pointed towards it, before he, the Sector, Destari and the Servant hurried towards it and locked themselves inside. A screen from inside showed Scott, in Janet's body, struggling to stand following the gunshot.
“Ha! I’ll be back in a moment.”
The four of them breathed a sigh of relief from inside of the locked room. They were safe from whoever was inside.
“Tell me, Doctor.” Destari began. “Did you kill that person's family?”
“I don’t think so. I don’t know if I could tell who he was because he could take any form he wished. I will stop him from doing whatever he’s about to do, but I need him to let go of Janet's body first.”
On the screen, the four of them watched as Janet entered, holding Matt in her hands. She threw him to the floor and chuckled as she looked towards the camera.
“I must apologise about me going away for a few moments there-I was just grabbing your other little friend. I believe his name was Matt. His body was my favourite! Anyhow, I’ve got a little proposition for you. If you do not come out of there and let me kill you, then I shall murder your friends. Both of them.”
She placed a gun on Matts head and grinned. The Doctor looked towards his friends.
“I’ve got no other choice. That shapeshifter could kill my friends and I cannot let that happen. It’s finally time: The death of the doctor is nigh.”
